Superbly refreshing site; noteworthy scholarship. However, I think that "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" was the 1st country-rock album (but that's another matter - I loved the way Clark blended bluegrass and pop with Dillard). I have the CRY album, which is excellent (didn't see John York mentioned when I glanced at your site; he told me that Gene was his fave Byrd). I enjoyed Einarson's book and conversed with him via e-mail, as well (was shocked to learn that not one former Byrd attended Gene's memorial or funeral). Oh, do have a look (if you haven't yet) at my review of "Set You Free: Gene Clark in the Byrds" at amazon.com (Nov. 5/06). Gene may well have had no peer as a pop/rock songwriter.

Hi Åge,You have a fine site and very helpful directions for finding Gene's grave in the cemetery. This past weekend, my wife and I and another couple, one of whom is a 2nd cousin of Gene's, visited Tipton. We went by the house he lived in his first 2 years on Morgan street and to St. Andrew cemetery. The little gold Buddha is still there. We left flowers and the lyrics of "With Tomorrow" with a note inviting a listen to some of Gene's tunes and a request to pass them on. Our soundtrack on the road trip was No Other, White Light, Dillard & Clark, Roadmaster, and the Mountain Stage performance. It was a beautiful day to remember Gene Clark and his music.

I visit tipton often. My mother lives there. I went to the grave site on Memorial Day. Someone left a cd at the grave and it said to share the music. I have done so. I loved the cd so much I went and bought five more. I am just discovering his music and have just fallen in love with it. Thanks to whoever put that cd there. I read in the Tipton Times that the city council is discussing putting up a tribute monument for him. Oh yea, the budda is still there too. Brad

Thanks to you I sought and purchased "Byrds: Alternative Takes" and the 2 CD version of "Under the Silvery Moon." Best of all is "CRY: After the Storm" from CD Baby. I was skeptical about the latter album lacking Gene's voice, but it is now my favorite with its fully realized versions of Gene's and Pat's songs. Thank you for sharing. John

Perhaps a movie about Gene's life and career? They did it for Richie Valens with La Bamba. Gene Clark deserves more recognition for the great songwriter he was. Thanks again and Merry Christmas to you & yours.

THANK YOU!! So very much for this lovely page! Gene was my uncle. My mother, Christine, is one of his many brothers and sisters. Did you know he was the second of 13 children?) His parents, Kelly G. and Mary Jeanne Clark were my grandparents. The shots of Tipton and the gravesite are beautiful. The "No Other" on the stone has so much less to do with his album and so much to do with the way our Grandmother felt about her son. "I put it there because there will be 'NO OTHER' like him." That's what she said. If you would be interested in some family stories and personal pictures, please contact me.

Nice tribute. I was a big Byrds fan since '65 & especially liked Gene's contributions so I followed his solo career from beginning to end. Interesting you mentioned the song 'Mary Sue' where he talks about Bonner Springs (Kansas). You probably know he went to high school there. I also grew up in Kansas & attended university in Lawrence (just west of KC) from '65-'69, where I went out with a girl from Bonner Springs whose older sister dated Gene in high school. (I don't think she was Mary Sue but it's possible.) Obscure connection I know but I thought it was kinda cool at the time. Only saw Gene once & got his autograph when MCH played in Hawaii in '78. One of the best concerts of my life! … You might want to check out Cousin Mike's blog if you don't know it yet (http://cousin-mike.blogspot.com). He has a great collection of MCH bootlegs & a 6-volume set compiled from all the Gene Clark bootlegs. … Also I'll put in a plug for my favorite local band in Lawrence at the time, The Blue Things. They formed in '64 at the same time as the Byrds & followed the same path from folk-rock to psychedelica. They cut one album for RCA in '65 and a few psychedelic singles in '66 (not long after 'Eight Miles High'). There's a reissue of their album & singles on one CD & good coverage of them on Allmusic & Wikipedia. Their lead singer/songwriter Val Stecklein has a lot in common with Gene in vocal style & songwriting so I think you might like them. Cheers!

Hello Age,I have been delving deep into the life of Gene Clark, as I more or less play him in my Byrds tribute band, The Byrds Collective. I've only been in the band for about 3 or 4 months. I've always loved The Byrds and I've been performing Feel A Whole Lot Better since the age of 13 (back when it was only 1 year or 2 old!). I'm almost done reading "Mr. Tambourine Man", his biography. I feel like I know Gene. Thanks for your heartfelt and meaningful website. Geno was a real talent, so unique and ahead of his time. The man had many demons, but that is relative since we all do to one degree or another. And he can be forgiven for all of them. He was a deeply sensitive man who struggled with the nature of his fame. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for putting up this website. For anyone who may be interested in our tribute band, you can visit www.thebyrdscollective.com.Thank you,Chuck
